BOX SCORE
BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin and Southern Maine men's ice
hockey teams combined for five goals and a dozen penalties in a
chaotic third period before finishing in a 6-6 deadlock on Saturday
evening at Sidney J. Watson Arena. The Polar Bears stand at 8-8-2
(5-6-2 NESCAC) while the Huskies sit at 9-9-1 (6-6-1 ECAC East)
after the contest.
Bowdoin skated to a two-goal lead in the opening period thanks to
a breakaway goal by Colin MacCormack and top-shelf score from Kyle
Shearer-Hardy. Southern Maine responded with three consecutive
goals to open the second stanza. Kyle Smith buried a breakaway goal
at 4:36 before Zach Joy redirected the game-tying score into the
cage at 10:32. The Huskies took the lead just 39 seconds later as
Chris Travis slipped the puck under the pads of Bowdoin's Richard
Nerland at 12:11. The Polar Bears were able to tie the score at
16:17 on the powerplay when Kyle Hanson's slapshot from the point
was tipped by a Husky defender and into the top corner of the net.
But Southern Maine regained the lead just 10 seconds
before the second intermission on a 5x3 powerplay. A pretty
one-timer feed from Steve Wielder was ripped home by Travis to give
the visitors a 4-3 lead heading into the final period.
Zach Joy extended USM's lead with another powerplay goal at
9:27 of the third period to give the Huskies a 5-3 lead. The goal
kicked off a chaotic three-minute stretch that saw Bowdoin score
twice in 16 seconds - on powerplay goals from Brendan Reich and
Mike Corbelle - before Dan Gordon put Southern Maine ahead again
with a goal at 12:35.
Bowdoin gained a powerplay with just under two minutes to play and
took advantage, as Corbelle received a pass from Shearer-Hardy on
the right wing and wristed a perfectly-placed shot into the lower
left corner to force overtime. Neither team could find the
game-winner as the contest ended in a deadlock.
Bowdoin finished 4/9 on the powerplay while USM went 3/9. The
teams combined for 54 penalty minutes, including a ten-minute game
misconduct penalty on Husky goaltender Jamie Gilbert. Gilbert
finished with 32 saves in 54:30 while Mason St. Hilaire allowed
just one goal in his 10:30 on the ice. Nerland ended with 25 saves
for the Polar Bears. Travis and Joy both had two goals and an
assist for Southern Maine. Corbelle had an assist in addition to
his two goals while Shearer-Hardy collected three assists and a
goal.
