BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's basketball team
won their sixth-straight contest, defeating Hamilton 49-44 at
Morrell Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. The Polar Bears improve to
9-2 overall while the Continentals drop to 5-3 this season.
The Continentals used back-to-back three-pointers from Laura
Wetmore to grab a 16-11 advantage late in the first half, as both
teams struggled offensively in the opening period. Bowdoin was able
to respond with six-straight points from Alexa Kaubris to regain
the lead and sustained a two-point edge, 25-23, heading into
intermission.
Bowdoin looked to pull away early in the second stanza, using an
8-1 surge out of the break to take their largest lead of the game,
33-24, with 16:51 remaining. But Hamilton refused to go away, using
the inside game of Sydney Fasulo to chip away at the Polar Bear
advantage. The Continentals cut the Bowdoin lead to a single point
on six occasions before finally tying the game at 44 on a pair of
Sarah Schrader free-throws with 3:30 remaining.
The Continentals would not score again, however, as the Polar
Bears converted on five-of-six free throws down the stretch to seal
the victory. Jill Henrikson netted a pair of freebies before Katie
Bergeron extended the lead to three points, 57-54, by hitting the
first of two from the charity stripe. After missing her second
attempt, Kaubris gathered a crucial offensive rebound with under 20
seconds remaining for the Polar Bears.
Kaubris finished with 13 points, eight boards and three steals
for Bowdoin, who also received 11 points off the bench from
Henrikson, all in the second half. Caitlin Hynes had eight points,
seven rebounds and three blocks for Bowdoin.
Hamilton was led by 13 points and 10 caroms from Fasulo, with
Schrader pitching in 11 points and nine rebounds and Wetmore adding
11 points and three steals. Bowdoin connected on just 25% of their
shots for the game, but forced 25 turnovers. The Polar Bears have
forced at least 20 turnovers in four of their last five games.
Saturday's game was the first between Hamilton and Bowdoin since
the 1999-2000 campaign. The Polar Bears hold a 5-1 edge in the
all-time series.
