BOX SCORE
WATERVILLE, Maine - Colby goaltender Dean Feole made 22 saves,
as the Bowdoin College men's ice hockey team was shut out for the
first time in nearly five years in a 1-0 victory for the Mules on
Tuesday evening. The contest was the non-league matchup between the
NESCAC rivals as Bowdoin falls to 7-8-1 this season while Colby
improves to 5-8-3.
Defense ruled Tuesday's contest as Bowdoin's Richard Nerland (34
saves) was just as stellar between the pipes as Feole. The
first-year made 14 first-period stops and several sprawling saves
in the second period as the Polar Bears killed off a 5x3 penalty to
keep the game scoreless. Bowdoin killed off another powerplay
chance late in the stanza, and earned one of their own to open the
third period.
The Polar Bears could not convert on the advantage, but increased
the offensive pressure, peppering Colby netminder Dean Feole. But
Feole answered every challenge and the Mules took advantage when
Matt Rappaport snapped a shot from the left circle that slipped
inside the post with 12:06 remaining.
That proved to be all Colby would need, as one last push down ice
by Mike Collins with less than 10 seconds remaining saw the Polar
Bear senior taken down in front of the cage, drawing a penalty.
Bowdoin won the ensuing draw, but could not find the net in the
closing moments as the Mules skated away with just their second win
over the Polar Bears since 2004.
Bowdoin leads the all-time series 98-84-8 and is 6-2-1 in last
nine games against Colby. The Polar Bears were shut out for the
first time since February 28, 2004 - a span of 118 games. Usually a
high-scoring contest, the 1-0 shutout is the lowest-scoring game in
the series since the Polar Bears took a 1-0 win at Colby on January
26, 1993.
