BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Tufts University women's basketball team
outscored Bowdoin 18-7 over the final 6:22, breaking open a tie
game to take an eventual 67-56 victory on Saturday. The Jumbos
improve to 13-2 (3-1 NESCAC) while the Polar Bears fall to 14-4
(2-1). It is Tufts' first win in Brunswick since 1991.
Bowdoin controlled the early minutes of Saturday's contest, jumping
out to a 10-2 lead thanks to a pair of early Leah Rubega jump
shots. The Polar Bears went cold late in the half, however, as the
Jumbos rolled off a 19-1 run over a span of 11 minutes to take a
24-13 lead. Bowdoin responded with a flurry of late baskets, and
tied the game at halftime on a 40-foot buzzer-beater by Katie
Bergeron, 28-28.
The teams traded buckets throughout most of the second half with
neither team holding more than a four-point advantage. With the
game tied at 49-49 with 6:22 on the clock, Tiffany Kornegay netted
a driving lay-in to spark a decisive 16-2 run for the Jumbos. Kim
Moynihan buried a three-pointer in the surge and Colleen Hart
nailed a long jumper and capped the run with a trifecta of her own
to give the visitors a 65-51 lead with a minute remaining.
Five Jumbos saw double-digits, led by Hart's 12 with five assists.
Moynihan posted 11 points and six boards while Vanessa Miller,
Casey Sullivan and Rachel Figaro scored 10 apiece. Bowdoin was led
by 13 points and nine rebounds from Alexa Kaubris. Katie Bergeron
also scored 13 points for the Polar Bears.
