BOX SCORE
MALDEN, Mass. Sophomore Tom Derosa scored two third-period goals
and freshman goalie Scott Barchard made 45 saves as the Tufts
University hockey team came from behind to defeat Bowdoin College,
5-3, in a NESCAC game Saturday afternoon at Valley Forum II.
The Jumbos trailed 3-2 entering the third period. Derosa's first
goal came three seconds into a power-play opportunity at the
10-minute mark to tie the score at 3-3. Two minutes later, Tufts
was on a penalty kill during which Derosa would strike again. He
scored short-handed with a wrap-around goal, his 10th of the year,
at 13:41 to put Tufts up 4-3. Freshman Nick Resor assisted on both
Derosa goals. The short-handed tally was Tufts' second in as many
games. The Jumbos added an empty-net goal by sophomore Dylan Cooper
with 1:09 left for the 5-3 final.
Barchard faced a slew of shots, but had to be steady instead of
spectacular. He made 16 saves in both the second and third periods
as Bowdoin finished with a 48-30 advantage in shots.
The visiting Polar Bears (7-7-1, 4-6-1 NESCAC) got on the
scoreboard first with a goal by freshman Aaron O'Callahan at 3:17
of the opening period. Tufts answered quickly, scoring on their
first shot with a power-play goal by sophomore defenseman Andy
Davis at 4:03 of the first.
Tufts took a 2-1 lead when junior defenseman Doug Wilson snapped a
shot from just outside the blue line that went in at 13:03 of the
first. However, Bowdoin evened the score at 2-2 on a short-handed
goal by sophomore Randy Luther at 18:01 to finish a busy first
period. Bowdoin had been unable to capitalize on an earlier
short-handed break-away, but did not fail on their second man-down
attempt.
Bowdoin came out of a penalty-filled second period with a 3-2 lead.
Just 10 seconds after a Polar Bear too many men on the ice penalty
was released, sophomore Kyle Hanson set up sophomore Brendan Reich
for a break-in and he beat Barchard top shelf at 16:51. However,
the Jumbos would improve to 2-1-2 against Bowdoin over the last
five seasons with a comeback in the third period.
