BRUNSWICK, Maine - The top-ranked Bowdoin College field hockey
team scored three times in the opening period en route to a 3-1
victory over Amherst on Saturday afternoon. The Polar Bears remain
unbeaten at 8-0 (4-0 NESCAC) this season. The Jeffs, who scored the
first goal allowed by Bowdoin this season in the second period, dip
to 3-3 (2-2 NESCAC).
A pair of reserves got the Polar Bears offense going midway through
the opening period. First-year Ella Curren came off the bench and
tagged a ball from the top of the circle that was redirected by
Madeleine McQueeney in front to give the hosts a 1-0 lead with
16:00 remaining in the first half. Moments later, sophomore Ingrid
Oelschlager beat two Amherst defenders down the middle of the field
and tucked a perfectly-placed shot inside the left post, beating
the diving save attempt of Amherst's Emily Vitale to make it 2-0
with 14:18 left in the frame. Leading scorer Lindsay McNamara
notched her conference-leading 16th goal of the season with seven
minutes left before the break to give Bowdoin a commanding halftime
lead.
Amherst got one back in the second half off a penalty corner
attempt. Carly Dudzik's nifty back-door feed to Haley Douds on the
doorstep broke Bowdoin's shutout streak at 532:00 to open the
season. The Polar Bears have outscored opponents 30-1 this
year.
Emileigh Mercer made three first-half stops between the posts for
Bowdoin. Emily Neilson did not make a save in her second half of
work. Vitale made eight saves in defeat for Amherst.
