MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Wesleyan's Matt Nevin scored with 1:12
remaining in the second half to propel Wesleyan to a 1-0 NESCAC
victory over visiting Bowdoin Saturday afternoon. It was the fifth
time in the last seven meetings that the Cardinals (1-1) have
downed the Polar Bears and avenged a 2-0 loss to Bowdoin (1-1) in
Middletown the last time the teams played during the first round of
the NESCAC tournament last season.
While Wesleyan had a 14-6 edge in shots, only five of the
Cardinals' attempts went on goal as Bowdoin keeper sophomore Dan
Hicks stopped the first four attempts before Nevin connected for
Wesleyan's first goal of the year. In posting his first career
shutout, Wesleyan netminder Nigel Stacey made three saves but also
roamed well in the goalie box to make numerous interceptions of
dangerous serves by Bowdoin.
The Polar Bears did hit two goal posts during the contest, the
second coming with about 17 minutes to go as freshman Sean Bishop
sent a shot from the right side toward the left post. It hit the
inside portion and caromed across the goal mouth before being
cleared out of harm's way by Wesleyan.
