BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's basketball team
connected on a school-record 12 three-pointers en route to a 95-56
victory over Maine Maritime in the opening day of the inaugural
Coastal Maine Classic Tuesday evening. The Polar Bears will play
Wheaton, a 78-75 double overtime winner over William Smith, on
Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. for the title. Maine Maritime will
play William Smith in the early game at 2:00 p.m.
Bowdoin (7-2) never trailed, jumping out to a 20-3 lead and
never looking back against the Mariners (3-6). Caitlin Hynes scored
10 points in the first half and finished with 18 in just 16 minutes
of play to pace the hosts. Bowdoin's dozen three-pointers tied the
school mark set in 2005 against Husson College. Sabrina Cote (12
points) and Calli Coffee (11 points) netted three trifectas apiece
to lead the squad, as Bowdoin's bench outscored Maine Maritime's
50-20.
Ellery Gould (13) and Colleen Sweeney (12) also saw
double-figures for the Polar Bears, who received nine assists
against just one turnover from Maria Noucas. Samantha Goda led the
Mariners with 21 points.
An entertaining opening contest saw Wheaton sprint to a 35-23
halftime lead and extend their advantage to 18 on a three-pointer
from Bri Smith with 17:45 remaining in the second half. The Herons
turned up the defensive pressure, forcing 14 second-half turnovers
and outscoring Wheaton 33-15 over the final 17 minutes to force
overtime. After scoring seven points apiece in the first extra
session, William Smith took a four-point edge, 72-68, on a running
lay-in by Mollie Danahy with 3:10 remaining in the second overtime.
The Herons finished the game on a 10-3 run, taking the lead for
good on a free-throw by Jennie Pleat with 13 seconds remaining,
76-75. Smith iced the game with a pair of freebies with four
seconds left.
Danahy was the star of the game in defeat, scoring 33 points and
adding eight steals and six rebounds. Erin Cunningham also reached
double digits with 10 points for the Herons. Wheaton responded with
five players in double figures, led by 17 from Krystin Hickey.
Andrea Bailey (13), Pleat (12), Jenny Champney (12) and Gabbie
DePalo (10) combined the pace the Lyons.
