BOX SCORE
BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College men's hockey team
defeated Colby 3-1 in the final meeting between the two rivals at
Dayton Arena on Tuesday. Behind a suffocating defense that allowed
just 17 shots, the Polar Bears improved to 4-0-1 (2-0-1 NESCAC) as
Colby dropped to 2-3-1 (2-0-1 NESCAC).
Bowdoin controlled the pace of play in the opening period, holding
a 10-1 shot differential over the Mules. The Polar Bears converted
on their only goal of the period when a pass from behind the net
from Thomas Herd found Mike Corbelle in the right slot. Corbelle's
third goal of the season gave the hosts a 1-0 edge at 7:34 of the
frame.
Colby was able to knot the score in the second period on the
powerplay. Billy Crinnon
received a pass from Karl Burns and initially whiffed on a
one-timer attempt, only to have the puck trickle over sprawling
Bowdoin netminder Chris Nerland into the goal at 10:29. Colby held
an 11-7 advantage in shots in the frame as the squads entered the
third period deadlocked.
Colin MacCormack changed that just 34 seconds into the frame.
Graham Sisson received a rebound off of Colby goalie Cody McKinney,
and slipped the puck to MacCormack, who tapped it into the net.
Later in the period, Matt Lentini caused a Colby turnover and the
loose puck came to Herd, who found Brendan Reich in front with a
perfectly-timed feed to give the Polar Bears a 3-1 lead at
9:08.
Nerland would make the lead stand, stopping 16 shots in the
victory to earn the Pete Schuh Award as the MVP of the
Colby-Bowdoin game. McKinney stopped 23 shots for the Mules.
Bowdoin leads the all-time series over the Mules 98-83-8, and
closes Dayton Arena with a stellar 39-12-3 mark against their
arch-rivals. The squads will play a non-conference game in
Waterville on January 27.
