BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bowdoin center Mark Phillips posted a
career-high 27 points and added 14 rebounds to pace the Polar Bear
men's basketball team in a 75-53 win over Kean University on Sunday
afternoon. The Polar Bears improve to 4-1 this season while the
Cougars drop to 3-3 overall.
Bowdoin shot 58% from the field and Kyle Jackson netted five
first-half three-pointers to give the Polar Bears a 45-31 edge at
the break. Kean used a 16-5 spurt out of halftime and when Dean
Hughes and Michael Oglesby netted back-to-back fast break layups
for the Cougars, the Bowdoin lead had been trimmed to 50-47 with
11:38 to play.
The Polar Bear defense clamped down from there, allowing Kean to
score just six points over the final 11:38, and Bowdoin warmed from
the field as a putback by Phillips capped an 11-0 surge for the
hosts. The bucket gave the Polar Bears a 61-47 lead with 5:30 to
play.
Phillips also added five assists as Kyle Jackson had 20 points
for the Polar Bears, including six trifectas. Tim Lane also saw
double-figures, scoring 12 points with Michael Hauser notching a
game-high eight assists.
Kean was led by 13 points from Vinnie Darpino. The Polar Bears
held the Cougars to just 34.4% shooting from the field and forced
13 turnovers. Bowdoin assisted on 23 of their 27 field goals for
the day.
