BRUNSWICK, Maine - The nation's longest overall and home-field
winning streak came to an end as the top-ranked Bowdoin College
field hockey team lost for the first time in nearly two years, 2-0,
to 12th-ranked Trinity College on Saturday. The Polar Bears see
their 31-game winning streak come to an end, as well as their
39-game homefield winning streak that dated back to October of
2004.
Bowdoin (11-1, 6-1 NESCAC) falls for the first time since losing
to Messiah College in the semifinals of the 2006 NCAA Tournament,
while Trinity (10-1, 6-1) beats the Polar Bears for the first time
since 1997. It is the first loss at Howard Ryan Field for Bowdoin
since falling to Colby in the NESCAC Tournament on October 31,
2004.
The Polar Bears controlled the pace of play in the early going,
taking the first eight shots of the game and holding an 8-0 edge at
intermission. Trinity's Gina DiNallo made a pair of saves in the
opening period to keep the Bantams in the contest.
Trinity stormed out of the gates in the second period and scored
on their first penalty corner and shot of the contest. Christine
Mwatarura converted on an assist from Payson Sword to give the
Bantams a 1-0 lead, marking the first time all season that Bowdoin
had trailed in a game. Bowdoin responded with a flurry of chances,
but DiNallo made three more saves for Trinity and Mwatarura knocked
home a loose ball in front of the Bowdoin net with under nine
minutes to go, sealing the win for Trinity with her second goal of
the game.
Emileigh Mercer (35 minutes, 0 goals against) and Emily Neilson
(35 minutes, two goals against) split time in the cage for Bowdoin
without either collecting a save. Bowdoin held a 15-4 edge in shots
and 13-5 lead in penalty corners.
