NEW LONDON, Conn. - Top ranked Bowdoin College (11-0, 6-0)
extended their winning streak to 31 games but it took a late goal
to put away a feisty Connecticut College (4-6, 1-4) team in a 3-1
NESCAC field hockey battle in New London Saturday.
Lindsay McNamara tallied her second score of the day and 21st of
the season with 3:31 to play, propelling the visitors to the
victory. Julia King chipped in with a goal and an assist for the
visitors, who have out-scored their opposition by a count of
38-to-2 in 11 games this season.
The Camels entered Saturday's game with momentum as winners of
four out of their last five contests. With 28:40 to play in the
first half, sophomore Bizzie Dow tested Bowdoin keeper Emileigh
Mercer with a nifty move but her shot was saved by the senior
goalkeeper.
Midway through the half, the visitors cashed in on a penalty
corner to take a 1-0 lead. Kristen Veiga served a pass to King on
the left side of the scoring circle and the senior buried a low
shot into the cage. Later on in the half with 7:24 remaining, the
Polar Bears doubled their lead, taking advantage on another corner.
King sent a ball toward the goal from the top of the circle and
McNamara redirected it in front of the net for the goal.
The Camels finally broke through with 25:28 to play, scoring on a
corner of their own. Roe had a shot that was saved but Sarah Napoli
was waiting on the doorstep to collect the rebound and score for
the hosts.
The Camels continued to frustrate the Polar Bears with some
different defensive looks. But with 3:31 to play, Ingrid
Oelschlager delivered a perfect crossing pass from the sideline to
McNamara, who was able to seal the victory with a one-timer.
Sophomore Robin Edwards had four saves
