BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College football team battled Middlebury in a defensive contest Saturday afternoon at Whittier Field, but the Panthers used a pair of third-quarter touchdowns to pull away for a 16-0 victory.
The Polar Bears fall to 0-2 on the season while Middlebury improves to 1-1. Bowdoin outgained the Panthers 314-277 in total offense and held the ball for more than 33 minutes, but four turnovers proved costly in the setback.
Game Highlights
- Defense dominated the opening half, with the teams playing nearly 30 minutes of scoreless football. Bowdoin moved into Middlebury territory on its opening possession and later put together an 11-play, 56-yard drive, but came away empty following a missed 42-yard field goal.
- The Polar Bear defense kept Middlebury off the scoreboard until the final seconds of the half. The Panthers drove 67 yards in the closing two minutes and Yaseen Mousa converted a 30-yard field goal with nine seconds remaining to give the visitors a 3-0 halftime advantage.
- Bowdoin's defense continued to create opportunities early in the third quarter, as the Polar Bears forced a turnover on Middlebury's second possession of the half. Overall, Bowdoin intercepted Panther quarterback Aidan Moss twice in the contest, with Steven Vargo and AJ Muse recording the picks.
- The pivotal play came midway through the third quarter when Middlebury's Carson Eutsay intercepted a Bowdoin pass and returned it 70 yards for a touchdown, extending the Panther lead to 10-0 with 9:17 remaining in the period.
- Middlebury followed with its only offensive touchdown of the afternoon, marching 80 yards on 12 plays and scoring on a 14-yard pass from Moss to Jordan Angstreich with 3:16 left in the third.
- Bowdoin continued to move the ball in the fourth quarter, including a 10-play, 77-yard drive that reached the Middlebury nine-yard line, but an interception ended the scoring opportunity with 2:21 remaining.

- Soren Hummel completed 20-of-38 passes for 232 yards, with Bowdoin finishing with a 232-155 advantage in passing yardage.
- Jude Baker led the Polar Bear receiving corps with five catches for 74 yards, while Jake Wang had a 44-yard reception. Conrad Babka added four catches for 36 yards and Michael Wolfendale had four receptions for 35 yards.
- Sean Ramos carried 21 times for a team-high 63 yards, while Nelson Dorsey added 21 yards on six attempts.
- Bowdoin finished with 314 yards of total offense to Middlebury's 277, ran just two fewer plays (69-67) and owned a 33:17-26:43 advantage in time of possession.
- Angus Leary spearheaded an outstanding defensive effort with nine tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, two sacks and three quarterback hurries.
- Charlie Saurack followed with eight tackles, while Zach Taylor and Abe Herzog had seven apiece. Taylor also recorded 1.5 tackles for loss.
- Steven Vargo and AJ Muse each intercepted a pass as Bowdoin held Middlebury to just 4.0 yards per play and 4-of-15 on third-down conversions.
- Caden Perry averaged 38.2 yards on five punts, including a 55-yarder, with two kicks placed inside the Middlebury 20.
- Bowdoin was held without a point for the first time since a 2019 loss to Tufts.
