Fast Start Not Enough as Football Falls at Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. – The Bowdoin College football team jumped to an early 10-point lead and forced four Amherst turnovers, but the Mammoths rallied for a 22-13 victory Saturday afternoon at Pratt Field.
Bowdoin falls to 0-3 on the season while Amherst improves to 3-0.
 
Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin's defense provided an immediate spark as Ferris Collins intercepted Colin Livatino and returned it 44 yards for a touchdown just 2:17 into the contest, giving the Polar Bears a 7-0 lead.
  • The Polar Bears forced another turnover on Amherst's ensuing possession, recovering a fumble at the Mammoth 23-yard line. Caden Perry converted the takeaway into points with a 34-yard field goal, pushing Bowdoin's advantage to 10-0 with 8:57 remaining in the opening quarter.
  • Amherst got on the board with a safety and pulled within 10-9 on an eight-yard touchdown pass from Livatino to Jack Berger with 41 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
  • The Mammoths took their first lead late in the second quarter when Livatino connected with Jadon Davis for a 19-yard touchdown, making it 15-10. Bowdoin answered before halftime, as Perry drilled a 38-yard field goal as time expired to cut the Amherst lead to 15-13 at the break.
  • Bowdoin took the second-half kickoff and moved 47 yards into Amherst territory, but Perry's 53-yard field-goal attempt was unsuccessful. Amherst answered with a seven-play, 65-yard drive, capped by a two-yard Demitrius Smith touchdown run for a 22-13 advantage.
  • The Polar Bear defense kept Bowdoin within striking distance the rest of the way, holding Amherst scoreless over the final 22:34. Sam Schwartz intercepted Livatino with 3:30 remaining to give Bowdoin one final opportunity.
  • Bowdoin drove 54 yards following the interception, reaching the Amherst nine-yard line before turning the ball over on downs with 1:16 remaining. 
By the Numbers
  • Bowdoin's defense forced four turnovers, intercepting Livatino twice and recovering two Amherst fumbles. The Polar Bears also recorded three sacks and held Amherst to just 209 yards of total offense.
  • Soren Hummel completed 23-of-39 passes for 171 yards without an interception.
  • Nelson Dorsey led the Bowdoin rushing attack with 49 yards on 11 carries and also caught six passes for 38 yards.
  • Conrad Babka led Bowdoin's receivers with six catches for 61 yards, while Jake Wang added six receptions for 47 yards.
  • Charlie Saurack paced the defense with eight tackles and a sack. Abe Herzog finished with seven tackles, while Angus Leary had five tackles, two tackles for loss, a sack, forced fumble and fumble recovery. Jake Reiser also recorded two tackles for loss and a sack.
  • Schwartz and Collins accounted for Bowdoin's two interceptions, with Collins returning his pick 44 yards for the Polar Bears' lone touchdown.
  • Perry connected on field goals of 34 and 38 yards, while Bowdoin held a 16-15 edge in first downs.
