MEDFORD, Mass. – The Bowdoin College football team held an early lead and stayed within striking distance throughout the contest, but Tufts used a strong second-half performance to ultimately pull away in a 20-13 decision at Ellis Oval on Saturday evening.
Bowdoin falls to 0-4 on the year while Tufts elevates to 3-1.

The Jumbos scored on the opening drive of the day with a 92 yard drive that took 5:14 off the clock resulting in a successful field goal from 25 yards out from Caden Lawlor, before the Polar Bears scored 10 unanswered points to head into halftime ahead 10-3.

Bowdoin also put up points on the first possession with Soren Hummel connecting with Peter Macaulay for a three yard touchdown pass capping a 14-play 75-yard drive that extended 7:15 making it 7-3 with 17 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

The Polar Bears added a field goal midway through the second quarter from 36 yards by Caden Perry while the defense held Tufts went 0-for-4 on third downs and accumulated just 74 yards of offense for a 10-3 halftime lead.

The Jumbos came out with momentum in the run game to start the second half before a 34 yard strike from Nate Johnson to John Getman set up the eventual two yard rush by Caden McCallum to tie the game at 10-all with 2:09 to go in the quarter.

Bowdoin reclaimed the lead with 10:47 to play with a 41 yard field goal from Perry to make it 13-10 following a 13 play drive that went 52 yards.

The Jumbos threatened to tie on the following possession but the 44 yard field goal try by Lawlor went wide left.

However, Tufts defense helped set up a score for the home team forcing a three-and-out to go with an intentional grounding penalty, which translated into a blocked punt into the end zone for a safety to make it 13-12 with 3:39 to play.

The Jumbos added a late rushing touchdown and two-point conversion with 10 seconds remaining to secure the win, trekking 57 yards in 10 plays while mastering clock manipulation leaving no time for a response in the 20-13 defeat.

Quarterback Soren Hummel completed 19 of 27 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown without throwing an interception.

Peter Macaulay led Bowdoin's receiving corps with four catches for 17 yards and touchdown, while Jude Baker hauled in five passes for 34 yards. Conrad Babka added two receptions for 40 yards.

Nelson Dorsey led the Polar Bears on the ground with 64 rushing yards on 18 carries. As a team, Bowdoin totaled 193 yards of offense, including 125 passing yards and 68 rushing yards.

Ferris Collins led the Polar Bears with 14 total tackles, including eight solo stops and six assists. Charlie Saurack followed with 13 tackles, recording five solo tackles and eight assists as Bowdoin's defensive unit worked to contain the Tufts offense.

Angus Leary added nine tackles, including half a tackle for loss, while Zach Taylor contributed seven stops. Brody Aeschliman recorded five tackles, helping lead a defensive effort.

Tufts had seven penalties for 85 yards while the Polar Bears were flagged for just two penalties for five yards.

Perry provided a spark on special teams, converting both of his field-goal attempts, connecting from 36 and 41 yards, and averaged 41.7 yards on three punts.
