BRUNSWICK, Maine – The top-seeded Bowdoin College men's lacrosse team improved to 15-0 for the first time in program history, cruising to a 22-4 win over eighth-seeded Williams (7-9) in the quarterfinals of the NESCAC Tournament Saturday afternoon.
The Polar Bears advance to the NESCAC semifinals at noon next Saturday, May 2, which will be hosted at Whittier Field, with the second semifinal scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start. Semifinal pairings will be determined at the conclusion of the quarterfinal contests on Saturday evening.
Game Highlights
- The Williams defense kept Bowdoin at bay in the opening quarter, limiting the Polar Bear chances and trailing just 2-1 with under a minute to play in the first.
- Bowdoin's Sam Raye-Steiner scored with 33 seconds left in the period to give the hosts a 3-1 lead heading into the second, opening the flood gates for the Polar Bears.
- Bowdoin scored six unanswered goals to open the lead up to 8-1 and, after a Williams goal cut the margin to 8-2, added five more, including a man-down goal by faceoff specialist Alex Choi, to extend the margin to 13-2 at intermission.
- In all, Bowdoin scored 12 straight goals in the second and third quarter to put the contest out of reach.
- Meanwhile, the Polar Bear defense limited the Ephs to just two goals over the first 45 minutes as netminder Alec Delgado made 12 stops before exiting.
By The Numbers
- Sam Raye-Steiner scored a game-high four goals for Bowdoin, adding two assists, while Casey Ryan posted a seven-point effort on three goals and two assists.
- Hudson Greene pitched in two goals and four assists and extended his hot stretch of play, scoring ten goals and six assists in Bowdoin's last three matches.
- Chris Berry, Michael Norton, and Ryan Winters all had a pair of goals in the Bowdoin offensive onslaught.
- Cam Wietfeldt led the effort by the Bowdoin faceoff unit, winning 13 of 16 on the day while Nico Schermer had six ground balls and a caused turnover for the Bowdoin defense.
- Alex Byrne and Alex Kenerson each had a caused turnover and four ground balls as well in the victory.
- After Delgado exited, Bowdoin netminders Eddie McElroy and Peter Flannery each made two saves in the fourth quarter.
- Bowdoin went 4-5 with the extra man opportunity in the win.
