Late Rally Comes Up Short as Baseball Falls to Southern Maine

BRUNSWICK, Maine – A ninth-inning rally by the Bowdoin College baseball team came up just short in a 5-4 setback to the University of Southern Maine on Tuesday evening at Pickard Field.

The Huskies move to 9-3 while the Polar Bears fall to 6-7.

Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to an RBI groundout by Lucas Tsai that scored Conor Moriarty and a Finn Cahill run-scoring single that brought home Liam Foley.
  • Southern Maine evened the score with a pair of runs in the third and took advantage of a two-run error by Bowdoin in the fourth to take a 4-2 advantage.
  • After USM tagged on a run in the eighth, Bowdoin mounted a ninth inning rally on another Cahill run-scoring single and a Will Cooke sac fly that made it 5-4.
  • However, the tying run was stranded on third as USM shut the door with a game-ending strikeout.
By The Numbers
  • Cahill went 2-4 with two RBI while Liam Foley had two hits, including a big ninth inning double.
  • USM's Hayden Strout got the win, going 7-0 innings, allowing two earned runs and retiring 14 straight batters in one stretch.
  • Bowdoin used ten different pitchers in the effort. Gately was tagged with the tough-luck loss after surrendering the go-ahead runs, unearned, in the fourth.
Up Next
  • Bowdoin will return to action this weekend with NESCAC play against Tufts, opening with a single game Friday at 3:00 p.m.
