Men's Hockey Shuts Out Amherst And Rides Third Period Rally To Victory

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin men's hockey team scored three goals in the final eight minutes of the game to collect a 3-0 win over visiting Amherst on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Polar Bears collect six points on the weekend and improve to 13-5-1 (11-3-1 NESCAC). Amherst leaves Maine with a 10-7-2 (5-7-1 NESCAC) record.
 
Game Highlights
  • Despite three power play opportunities in the first period, Amherst only held a slight 12-10 shots on goal advantage.
  • Bowdoin nearly converted while on the penalty kill in the final two minutes of the second period. Colin Wojciechowski intercepted a puck at the top of Bowdoin's zone and earned a breakaway opportunity. Wojciechowski tried to wrist a shot top shelf but missed high.
  • Louie Marcellino broke the game open with a power play goal at 12:56 in the third. Marcellino wrapped around the back of the net and tucked the puck inside the left post.
  • Ricky Volpe gave Bowdoin an insurance goal with three minutes remaining. Volpe intercepted a clear attempt in the slot and sent a shot right back down the chute to make it 2-0.
  • Hunter Fetterolf banked an empty-netter from in front of the Bowdoin bench in the last minute.
 
By the Numbers
  • Despite 14 minutes of power play opportunity for Amherst, the Mammoths remained scoreless.
  • Bowdoin went 1-for-3 on the power play.
  • Jacob Osborne had a 29 save shutout.
  • Andrew Palena made 23 stops.
