Tufts Pulls Away From Men's Basketball in Second Half

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College men's basketball team hung with 13th-ranked Tufts in the opening half, but the Jumbos used a second half surge to take an 81-69 win in Morrell Gymnasium on Friday evening.
 
The Polar Bears fall to 9-4 (0-1 NESCAC) while the Jumbos improve to 12-2 (1-0 NESCAC).
 
Game Highlights
  • The teams both shot 44% from the field in the opening half as a Tufts scored the final five points of the period to turn a three-point deficit into a 34-32 edge at intermission.
  • Tufts increased their lead to ten points, 48-38, with a 14-6 run out of halftime, and led by as many as 12 points with 13:30 to go.
  • Bowdoin didn't go away, however, rolling off a 10-2 run to claw back into the game, trimming the lead to 54-50 on a Benedek Maly three-point play.
  • The Polar Bears cut the lead to four on three occasions in the second half, but Tufts took control with under eight minutes to play, scoring seven straight points to push the lead back to double digits, and led by no fewer than eight points for the remainder as they held off the Polar Bears.
By The Numbers
  • Bowdoin finished at 45% from the field, but went 4-15 from three-point range, as Tufts shot 49% and knocked down seven three-pointers.
  • Ray Cuevas finished with a game-high 28 points to lead all scorers. Kevin Reeves scored ten points and five boards.
  • Benedek Maly had nine points and seven rebounds for Bowdoin.
  • Tufts held a 39-27 edge on the glass and went 17-22 from the free throw line in the second half to seal the win.
