Quinn Leads Women's Basketball to Comeback Win Over Amherst

BRUNSWICK, Maine – Down by seven midway through the third quarter, the Bowdoin women's basketball team stormed back for a thrilling 57-52 win over Amherst on Saturday afternoon in Morrell Gymnasium. The Polar Bears improve to 17-1 overall (6-0 NESCAC) while the Mammoths fall to 15-5 (4-2 NESCAC).
 
Game Highlights
  • A tightly-played first half saw the Polar Bears maintain a lead throughout, with Bowdoin opening up as many as an eight-point edge, 21-13, four minutes into the second quarter.
  • The Mammoths answered with a 15-7 surge to deadlock the contest at 28 with 1:06 left in the opening half.
  • Bowdoin closed the half with four straight points from Grace Kinum to take a 32-28 lead at the break.
  • Amherst burst out of the gate in the third quarter, rolling off a 10-2 run to take their first lead of the game.
  • Amherst increased their lead to as many as seven points, 43-36, with 1:55 to go in the third period but Abbie Quinn scored five big points in the final minute to cut the lead to 43-41.
  • The fourth quarter belonged to Quinn, who outscored Amherst by herself (10-9) on perfect 4-4 shooting. Eight of those points came in a 10-0 Bowdoin run that gave the Polar Bears the lead for good, 51-45.
  • Amherst cut the lead to three points on two occasions down the stretch but could get no closer as the Polar Bears closed out the win.
By The Numbers
  • Quinn finished with a game-high 21 points to go with six rebounds while Grace Kinum scored 17 with five rebounds, and four assists.
  • Maria Belardi had a team-high eight rebounds while Jamie Yu pitched in three steals.
  • Bowdoin finished at 38% from the field as Amherst connected on 39% but the Polar Bears took advantage at the line, going 16-23 from the free throw stripe.
  • The Polar Bears have now won four straight against Amherst since 2008.
