Men's Basketball Earns Big NESCAC Win Over Colby

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College men's basketball team netted a big conference win over Colby on Saturday afternoon in Morrell Gymnasium, 69-61. The win improves the Polar Bears to 11-6 (2-2 NESCAC) while dropping the Mules to 13-5 (1-3 NESCAC).
 
Game Highlights
  • An evenly-played first half saw the teams deadlocked at 30-30, setting up a furious second half between the Maine rivals.
  • The teams swapped buckets to 38-38 before a three-point play by Kevin Reeves keyed a 10-1 Bowdoin surge, capped by a three-pointer from Alex Halpern and jumper by Mason Dawkins that gave the Polar Bears a 48-39 lead with 14 minutes to go.
  • Bowdoin maintained that advantage, pushing it to as many as 13 points following a Halpern jumper, 59-46, with 8:45 remaining.
  • Colby responded with a 9-2 run, trimming the lead to six, before Cuevas knocked down a three-pointer to help build a ten point edge with 1:23 to play.
  • Colby used some late free throws to cut the edge to five points, 66-61 a few moments later, but Ben Chilson doused all thoughts of a comeback with a three-pointer that pushed the lead to eight points with 31 seconds left.
By The Numbers
  • Ray Cuevas scored a game-high 21 points, with 12 coming in the second half, while Mason Dawkins ended with 12 points, seven rebounds, and three assists.
  • Kevin Reeves scored 11 points before fouling out while Alex Halpern added nine points.
  • Bowdoin finished at 40% shooting for the game and held Colby to 33% while cashing in 17 second chance points on 12 offensive boards.
  • The Polar Bears also knocked down 8-9 free throws in the second half and scored 17 points off turnovers.
