Bates Wins In Overtime After Second Half Rally

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bates field hockey team mounted a second half comeback and won in overtime to hand Bowdoin its first loss of the season in a 4-3 overtime thriller on Tuesday night.
 
The Polar Bears are 5-1 (2-1 NESCAC). The Bobcats remain perfect at 7-0 (3-0 NESCAC).
 
Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin got on the board first at 6:51. Emily Ferguson and Mackay Bommer fought Bates for the ball on the end line on the right side of the cage. Ferguson freed the ball up to Maddie Mrva who found the net.
  • Five minutes into the second quarter, Bommer finished off a cross-goal feed from Ella Davies that went from left post to right.
  • The Polar Bears closed out the final two minutes of the first half with a third goal. Mrva fired a shot from the top of the circle and Fei Yang-Sady deflected the ball from the stroke line past the goalie.
  • Bates came out and scored nearly seven minutes into the third quarter. Elsa Copeland carried down the left side for a two-on-two breakaway from the midfield into Bowdoin's circle. Copeland dished right to Sophia Cordoni for a finish.
  • Bates tied the game with two goals in the final four minutes of regulation. Elena Agosti found Sophie O'Sullivan on the back door and a Brooke Moloney-Kolen direct off a corner.
  • With second remaining in the first overtime, Copeland drew Lauren O'Donald out of the cage and dished right for a Moloney-Kolen deflection.
 
By the Numbers
  • Bates held a narrow 14-11 overall edge in shots and 11-10 edge in shots on goal.
  • O'Donald and Ava Donohue both made seven saves.
  • Bates took seven corners and Bowdoin earned five.
