Bowdoin Falls in Football Season Opener to Tufts

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College football team lost its season opener on Saturday to Tufts University at Whittier Field, 13-0. The Polar Bears fall to 0-1 on the year while the Jumbos improve to 1-0.
 
Game Highlights
  • Tufts scored on the opening drive of the afternoon, marching 84 yards in 13 plays to score on a seven yard run by Chartellis Reece at 5:04 of the first quarter.
  • That proved to be the only touchdown of the day as the defenses dominated from there out.
  • Bowdoin could only muster 59 yards of offense in the opening half as Tufts was able to add a second quarter field goal to extend the lead to 10-0 at the break.
  • Tufts scored another field goal out of halftime to take a 13-0 edge midway through the third quarter.
  • Bowdoin drove into Tufts territory on four occasions in the second half, but a combination of turnovers and penalties doomed the Polar Bears' hopes of a comeback.

  • Michael Wolfendale went 7-14 for 101 yards passing and 41 yards rushing for the Polar Bears.
  • Conrad Babka caught two passes for 51 yards.
  • Defensively Steven Vargo led Bowdoin with nine tackles. Zach Taylor had eight while Angus Leary posted 2.5 tackles for loss.
  • Tufts went 8-15 on third downs in the game and held the ball for 37:21 while Bowdoin went 2-9 and owned a time of possession of 22:39.
