Baseball Steals Series With Doubleheader Sweep of Bates

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep to take the series against Bates on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Polar Bears are 17-3 after the 3-2 walk-off win in game one and 8-2 victory in the second matchup. Bates falls to 4-13 with a 2-4 NESCAC record.
 
Game One Highlights
  • Chris Dirks gave Bowdoin a 1-0 lead in the second with a single up the middle that drove in Finn Cahill.
  • Bates tied the game in the following inning only to see Bowdoin regain the lead in the bottom half of the third.
  • With runners on the corners, Cahill drew the throw to second on a stolen base attempt but stopped midway along the basepath. The rundown between first and second allowed Kevin Murray to score.
  • The Bobcats again tied the game in the next inning.
  • Bowdoin earned the walk-off victory as Reuben Siegel bunted down the third base line and the throw to first sailed over the first baseman's head. Cal Thompson was able to score from second.
  • Alastair Rose went four innings with five hits and two runs allowed. Rose walked two and struck out one.
  • Alex Saavedra tossed two innings and allowed two hits with a strikeout.
  • Will Bordes pitched the final inning and earned the win with one hit allowed.
  • Cahill was the lone player with a multi-hit game, but eight of Bowdoin's nine batters recorded a hit.
 
Game Two Highlights
  • Bowdoin jumped on the Bobcats in game two to take a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Lukas Tsai recorded an RBI single and Cahill had a sacrifice fly to center to plate Liam Foley. Will Cooke drove in two runs with a single to left center.
  • Jackson Melendy recorded five strikeouts leading into the fourth inning. Melendy got himself out of a two-on one-out jam with back-to-back strikeouts.
  • Foley added an RBI single in the fourth and Kevin Murray launched an opposite field two-run blast to right.
  • Bates spoiled the shutout bid with a pair of runs in the seventh inning.
  • Conor Moriarty drew a bases-loaded walk in the eighth to conclude the scoring.
  • Melendy went 6.2 innings with 10 strikeouts and two walks. Melendy allowed just two hits and one run.
  • Sam Sacerdote closed out the game with three strikeouts and one hit allowed.
  • Bowdoin combined for 11 stolen bases. Including three from Siegel, Murray, and Tsai.
  • Moriarty and Tsai both went 2-for-3.
