BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College women's basketball team used a dominant fourth quarter performance to pull away for a 67-54 win over SUNY Cortland in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday evening in Morrell Gymnasium.
The Polar Bears (29-0) advance to the Division III "Sweet Sixteen" for the second straight year and 17
th time in school history. Bowdoin will face Smith College in the third round of the tournament next Friday, March 14. Sectional sites will be announced on Sunday. Cortland finishes an excellent season with a record of 25-4,
Game Highlights
- Bowdoin tied the game and took its first lead, 8-7, off a pair of Carly Davey free throws. Cortland tied the game again at 10-10 before Bowdoin regained the lead and closed out the quarter with a 17-16 advantage.
- Bowdoin led by as much as six in the second as Sydney Jones drained a jumper, but the Red Dragons put up five straight points to tie the game 26-26. The Polar Bears finished the half up two.
- The teams traded blows in the third quarter with six lead changes and headed into the final quarter tied 44-44.
- The Polar Bears went on a 12-2 run to start the fourth and cruised through the remainder of the game paced by 10 points from Maria Belardi.
By the Numbers
- Jackie Funk had a game-high 18 points for the Red Dragons who shot 36% from the field and 18% from three-point range.
- Sydney Jones led Bowdoin with 17 points, eight rebounds, and two steals.
- Davey and Belardi both scored double digits. Belardi went 2-for-3 from three-point range and 4-for-6 from the field during the fourth quarter.
- Bowdoin shot 41% and 36% from outside the arc.
