Men's Basketball Falls to Top-Ranked Wesleyan

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College men's basketball team couldn't overcome a halftime deficit in a loss to top-ranked Wesleyan University on Friday night in Morrell Gymnasium, 84-73. The Polar Bears fall to 11-12 (1-8 NESCAC) while the Cardinals move to 23-0 (9-0 NESCAC).
 
Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin took an early lead out of the gate thanks to five early points from Nolan Bessire, but the Cardinals gained their footing and held the Polar Bear offense down as they took the lead.
  • The Polar Bears turned the ball over nine times and shot 32% from the field as the Cardinals took a 37-21 edge into the locker room.
  • Bowdoin rallied early in the second frame, coming out of the break on an 8-0 run, capped by an Afamdi Achufusi three-pointer, that cut the lead to eight points, 37-29.
  • The Polar Bears continued to push, and cut the lead to as few as five points, 47-42, following a Will Logue jumper with 14:21 to go.
  • Wesleyan answered with an 8-1 surge to push the lead back to double digits and Bowdoin could get no closer than nine points for the remainder of the contest.
By The Numbers
  • Ray Cuevas led Bowdoin with 20 points while James McGowan had a season-high 19 points with six rebounds and two steals.
  • Afamdi Achufusi had seven points, eight rebounds, and two steals while Will Logue ended with nine points.
  • Bowdoin shot 58% from the field in the second half and ended at 45% for the contest. Wesleyan shot 46% for the game and went 17-22 from the free throw line in the victory.
