BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin men's ice hockey team won a shootout over Colby 1-0 following 65 minutes of scoreless hockey in the 223rd meeting of the teams.
The Polar Bears lead the all-time series 111-101-11. The rivalry is the longest-running rivalry in Division III with the first game dating back to 1922. The game goes down as a tie with the Polar Bears sitting at 7-9-2 (5-5-2 NESCAC) and Colby at 10-5-3 (5-5-2 NESCAC).
Game Highlights
- The Polar Bears and Mules played a fast-paced first period and traded power play opportunities without any goals.
- Jacob Osborne kept Colby off the board in the final two minutes, coming up with a massive save off a backdoor shot by Tyler Crist.
- Bowdoin responded with a Gabe Shipper shot block at the top of the zone and carried into the Colby zone. Shipper could not get a shot off before a Colby defender closed down the opportunity.
- Midway through the second Jayden Grier got a breakaway and earned a one-on-one with Osborne. Osborne stood tall and stopped the point-blank shot.
- Shipper again came up with an intercepted pass at the top of the zone and turned the play into a breakaway opportunity. Cooper Rautenstrauch stopped the shot to keep the game tied 0-0 going into the second intermission.
- Shipper scored the lone shootout goal. The junior was Bowdoin's first shooter and converted with a backhander.
- Osborne stopped all three skaters he faced to remain perfect in shootouts.
By the Numbers
- Osborne made 29 saves in the shutout and was named game MVP at the conclusion of the shootout.
- Rautenstrach made 32 stops for the Mules.
- Colby held a slight 33-29 edge in faceoffs.
- Both teams went 0-for-2 on the power play.
