Men's Basketball Falls Late to Amherst

BRUNSWICK, Maine – A late run by the Amherst men's basketball team tipped Bowdoin in a physical contest in Morrell Gymnasium on Saturday, 59-55. The Mammoths improve to 11-9 (2-4 NESCAC) while the Polar Bears fall to 10-10 (0-6 NESCAC).
 
Game Highlights
  • A low-scoring first half saw the Mammoths claim a 25-22 lead thanks to 11 points from Will Scherer, who went 5-6 from the field.
  • Bowdoin rallied early in the second period to tie the score at 30 on a layup from Nolan Bessire with 16:55 to go.
  • The Polar Bears took as many as a three-point lead on two occasions before the teams traded the lead throughout the final ten minutes.
  • The game was tied at 48-48 with 2:37 remaining, when Amherst scored six straight points to open up a 54-48 edge with 33 seconds to go.
  • Bowdoin was able to mount a furious late rally, including a four-point sequence that closed the gap to 57-55 with seconds remaining. But Amherst was able to grab a key rebound off a missed Bowdoin free throw and hang out to win.

  • Neither team shot more than 36% from the field for the game and Amherst took advantage of a 15-9 edge in made free throws in the contest.
  • Ray Cuevas finished with 19 points while Afamdi Achufusi scored 11 points with ten rebounds.
  • Amherst owned a 47-34 edge in rebounding in the game.
