Men's Hoops Prevails in High-Scoring Battle With UMass Boston

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College men's basketball team defeated UMass Boston 96-89 in a high-scoring contest Friday night in Morrell Gymnasium. The Polar Bears improve to 3-1 while the Beacons fall to 1-4.
 
Game Highlights
  • UMass Boston opened the game with a 13-6 edge in the opening five minutes, but Bowdoin found its footing and rolled off a 12-0 run, capped by an Adam Bello three-pointer, to take an 18-13 edge.
  • Bowdoin briefly pushed the lead to double figures following a Kevin Reeves lay-in with seven minutes to play in the half, 26-15, but the Beacons closed the gap to four with under a minute to play.
  • Ben Chilson connected on a three-pointer to send Bowdoin into the break with a 38-31 lead.
  • The teams traded blows in a high-scoring second half that saw the teams combine for 116 points and 38 free throw attempts.
  • Bowdoin was able to open up as much as a 15-point lead midway through the half, following a Mason Dawkins bucket, 61-46, but the Beacons refused to go away.
  • The Beacons cut the lead back to eight with six on the clock, but Ray Cuevas scored 11 straight points for Bowdoin, pushing the lead back into double digits, where it would stay until the closing moments.

  • Cuevas finished with a career-high 33 points, including a 14-14 effort from the free throw line.
  • Mason Dawkins also totaled a career best, scoring 22 points while Kevin Reeves had 12 points and eight rebounds.
  • Ben Chilson added 12 points, on four three-pointers, off the bench.
  • Bowdoin finished at 50% shooting in the contest while UMass Boston connected on 48% from the field.
  • The Polar Bears grabbed 18 offensive rebounds, cashing in 23 second chance points that proved to be the difference in the game.
