Men's Soccer Dispatches Lyon College in NCAA First Round Win

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College men's soccer team set a program record for goals in an NCAA Tournament game in a 7-2 win over visiting Lyon College on Saturday in the opening round of the Division III Championship. The Polar Bears (11-3-3) advance to the second round of the tournament Sunday where they will face UMass Boston, winners over Roger Williams in game two, at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow on the Pickard Multipurpose Turf Field.

Match Highlights
  • Bowdoin put some early pressure on the left side of the Lyon defense and it paid off in the sixth minute when Alden Mehta found Mateo Pacelli with a beautiful feed on the wing. Pacelli carried it into the box and rocketed it into the top right corner for the game's first goal.
  • The Polar Bears doubled their lead in the 15th minute when Pacelli threaded a pass to the center of the box to Tyler Huck, who buried it at 14:35.
  • Another strong offensive push by the Polar Bears resulted in a ball coming out to the right wing for Huck, who lofted a pass to the far post where Adam Prince headed it home for a 3-0 lead in the 23rd minute. Three minutes later Prince headed home a Surkov volley to make it 4-0.
  • The Scots got on the board late in the first half when a loose ball in the Bowdoin box came to the foot of Andre Rodriguez, who rifled a shot that slipped under the cross bar in the 32nd minute.
  • Bowdoin regained their four goal lead before the break thanks to a great individual effort by Felipe Rueda Duran, making it 5-1 at the break.
  • Prince completed the hat trick in the 65th minute for Bowdoin, taking a feed from Mehta and putting into an empty net to make it 6-1. Donovan Sinicropi added a goal for Bowdoin in the 70th minute to increase the lead to 7-1.
  • Tiago Donadon got one back for Lyon in the 83rd minute to close out the scoring.
By The Numbers
  • Prince's hat trick was the first ever for a Bowdoin player in NCAA Tournament play. Bowdoin's seven goals also easily surpassed the team's previous high for tournament play (3).
  • Prince totaled his first collegiate hat trick as Bowdoin's seven goals were also a season high. Alden Mehta also had a career-high three assists.
  • Bowdoin owned a 28-5 edge in shots for the contest and 7-2 lead in corner kicks.
