BRUNSWICK, Maine – For the second time in three seasons, the Bowdoin College men's soccer team will head to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Division III Tournament, as the Polar Bears held off UMass Boston 3-2 on Sunday afternoon in a second round match at Pickard Field.
The Polar Bears (12-3-3) advance to face Conn College in the national quarterfinals next Saturday at Tufts University. Tufts will face Messiah in the other sectional contest. Saturday's winners will play on Sunday for a trip to the Division III Final Four. UMass Boston ends its season with a record of 13-4-4.
Match Highlights
- The Beacons got on the board first, putting pressure down the left side and delivering a cross to the center of the box. The ball deflected off a Bowdoin defender and into the net for an own goal at 16:18, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.
- Moments later, Bowdoin's Alden Mehta drove into the UMass Boston penalty area and was taken down, awarding the Polar Bears a penalty kick at 17:51, which Tyler Huck deposited into the net to deadlock the score at 17:51.
- Five minutes later Keito Ishibashi rushed down the right side and delivered a perfect cross to the foot of Liam Myers for the go-ahead goal at 22:43 and a 2-1 halftime lead for the Polar Bears.
- Bowdoin controlled the pace of play to start the second half cashed in about ten minutes into the frame when Tyler Huck received a pass from Mateo Pacelli on the right side of the box and left-footed a rocket to the top-right corner for a 3-1 lead with 35 minutes to go.
- UMass Boston was able to get one back in the 86th minute when Ryan Lima found the back of the net. The Beacons had a pair of late corner kicks, but couldn't find the game-tying goal.

- With two goals on the day, Huck raised his season total to 13 (third in a single season in program history) and season points total to 34 (second in program history). He also moved into second place in program history in career goals (34, one shy of school mark) and 87 points (also one shy of school record).
- Bowdoin held an 18-7 edge in shots in the game and 4-2 lead in corner kicks.
- Alex Ainsworth made two saves in goal for Bowdoin while Mario Hajhdi made three stops for the Beacons.
- The Polar Bears will be making their third trip to the Sweet Sixteen in program history, joining the 2010 and 2022 squads.
