Women's Hoops Sprints to Early Lead, Coasts to Win at Hamilton

CLINTON, N.Y. – The Bowdoin College women's basketball team used an explosive first half to cruise to a 66-50 win at Hamilton on Friday evening. The fourth-ranked Polar Bears (19-0, 5-0 NESCAC) remain one of four unbeaten teams in Division III with the win while the Continentals fall to 13-6 (2-3 NESCAC).
 
Game Highlights
  • The teams traded buckets in the early going, and were tied at 9-9 midway through the opening frame.
  • Bowdoin completely took over from there, closing the first quarter on a 17-5 run, sparked by three-pointers from Carly Davey and Sydney Jones.
  • Up 26-14 heading into the second quarter, Bowdoin opened the period on an 11-2 surge, pushing their lead to 21 points on a Melissa Leone lay-in with five minutes left in the half.
  • Hamilton was able to climb back to within 16 at the break, and cut the lead to 14 moments into the third quarter, but Bowdoin replied with an 8-1 run that built the lead back over 20 points, where it remained for most of the second half.
  • Bowdoin led by as many as 28 points in the fourth quarter before a 7-0 fourth quarter foul advantage for Hamilton and ensuing free throws cut the final margin to 16.
By The Numbers
  • Sydney Jones scored a game-high 18 points with four rebounds and three steals in 25 minutes of action.
  • Melissa Leone scored 11 points while seven other Polar Bears scored, led by eight from Callie Godfrey, and seven from Carly Davey, who also had seven rebounds and four assists.
  • Bowdoin finished at 45% shooting for the game and held Hamilton to 34% while scoring 18 points off turnovers.
  • Hamilton ended 13-20 from the free throw line compared to 6-6 for Bowdoin in the game.
