BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin men's ice hockey team mounted a third period comeback to force overtime and earn a 3-3 tie with Williams and shootout victory on Saturday evening.
The game is recorded as a 3-3 tie, but the Polar Bears (7-9-1, 5-5-1 NESCAC) won the shootout by a 2-0 margin over the Ephs (6-8-2, 3-6-1 NESCAC).
Game Highlights
- The Ephs scored first at 13:02 to go ahead 1-0. Liam Jones fired a shot from the left point that deflected off a Bowdoin player and skipped through to Logan Valkama who finished the play top shelf.
- Luke Wheeler tied the game with 1:47 remaining in the first period on a short-handed tally. The senior captain spun around in front of the net and tucked a quick shot inside the left post.
- Williams responded in the final minute to regain the lead. Jake McManus and Rowan Heithoff battled with a defender in the left corner and Heithoff came away with possession for a quick shot.
- A turnover in Bowdoin's defensive end gave the Ephs a 3-1 edge in the final two minutes of the second. Trevor O'Brien intercepted a pass along the right boards and put a shot five-hole on Jacob Osborne.
- Bowdoin cut its deficit to one five minutes into the final period. Isaac Abbott sent the puck from the right point over to Finnegan Burke on the left point. Burke fired off a shot that Kyle Jarosz tipped as it flew past.
- Aidan Lyons scored the game-tying goal with 3:21 remaining in the game. James Cerepak poked the puck out of the left corner up the boards to Finnegan Burke. Burke slipped an off-speed pass center to Aidan Lyons who put a shot past Cal Sandquist.
- Gabe Shipper took the first shootout line and rang a shot off the pipe. Jacob Osborne came up with a massive save on the opposite end to keep it 0-0. Luke Wheeler came through with a goal and O'Brien missed wide, giving Bowdoin a 1-0 edge. Finnegan Burke iced the shootout with a goal to make it 2-0 in favor of the Polar Bears.
