Men's Hockey Returns To Win Column With Win at Wesleyan

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Bowdoin men's ice hockey team snapped its losing streak with a 5-3 victory at Wesleyan on Saturday evening.
 
The Polar Bears sit at 6-9-0 with a 4-5-0 NESCAC record. The Cardinals sit at the bottom of the conference with a 2-9-3 (1-6-1 NESCAC) mark.
 
Game Highlights
  • The teams combined for six goals in the first period. Bowdoin scored four straight before allowing two Wesleyan goals in the final 1:28 of the frame.
  • Isaac Abbott put Bowdoin on the board at 2:05 as the Polar Bears won a faceoff on the right dot and kicked the puck around and over to Abbott at the top of the zone. Abbott fired a slapshot through traffic for the 1-0 lead.
  • Bowdoin scored its second goal off another faceoff win on the right side. This time Jake Sullivan did the honors from the top of the zone.
  • The Polar Bears made it 3-0 at 8:58 with a finishing move by Will Rice on the left post. Michael Dinges ripped a shot from the right point to make it 4-0 at 14:21.
  • Wesleyan clawed back into the game with a pair of last minute goals before the first intermission. Owen Sweet skated behind the goal and found Hayden Hanes out front for a one-timer.
  • The Cardinals netted a buzzer-beater on the back post to cut the deficit to two goals.
  • Wesleyan found its third goal in the waning minutes of the second period, pulling within one. Andrew Haxton carried down the left side and looked to cross a pass to a teammate, only to see the puck deflect off a defender's stick and past Jake Fillion.
  • Luke Wheeler gave Bowdoin an empty-net insurance goal with 45 seconds remaining.
 
By the Numbers
  • Neither team could convert on their power play opportunity, with both sides going 0-for-1.
  • Jake Fillion made 29 saves to earn the win in net.
  • Wesleyan goalies struggled with a combined 12 saves.
  • Bowdoin held a 44-40 edge in faceoff wins.
