Men's Hockey Battles Amherst In 5-2 Loss

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin men's hockey team extended its winless streak with a 5-2 loss at home to Amherst on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Polar Bears dip to 5-8-0 (3-4-0 NESCAC) on the season as Amherst leaves Maine with split results and a 6-6-1 (3-3-1 NESCAC) record.
 
Game Highlights
  • The Polar Bears jumped ahead 1-0 at 4:08 in the first. Luke Wheeler backhanded a centering pass to Gabe Shipper at center ice who carried into Amherst territory. Shipper carried to the right side of the goal and passed back up to Finnegan Burke. Burke received and fired to best Andrew Palena.
  • Amherst broke through with 3:08 remaining in the second period. Oliver Flynn put a shot off pads and Bobby Luca buried the rebound.
  • Josh Burke put the Mammoths ahead in the final minute of the frame with a shorthanded goal. Luca took a low angle shot that bounced off pads and allowed Burke to make another bid. Burke tracked down his own rebound and put away the second attempt.
  • Amherst scored another power play goal midway through the third period and added two empty net goals sandwiched around a Bowdoin goal.
 
By the Numbers
  • Bowdoin went 0-for-3 on the power play.
  • Amherst was 2-for-4 on the power play and added a short handed goal.
  • Jacob Osborne made 24 stops in net.
  • Palena made 21 total saves, including 16 in the third period.
