Women's Volleyball Knocks Off Third-Ranked NYU

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Bowdoin College volleyball team earned its highest-ever win over ranked opponent, defeating third-ranked NYU in a five-set thriller on Sunday in the Big Apple. The Polar Bears improve to 2-1 on the season while the Violets drop their first match of the year and fall to 6-1.
 
Match Highlights
  • Bowdoin took the win by set scores of 25-22, 19-25, 21-25, 25-20, 15-13.
  • After taking the first set and falling in the next two, Bowdoin jumped to an early lead in set four, taking a 7-3 edge out of the gate and never trailing in a 25-20 triumph to force a deciding fifth.
  • The dramatic fifth set featured ten tie scores and nine lead changes and the squads traded blows throughout.
  • Tied at 12-12, a kill by NYU gave the hosts a 13-12 edge. Bowdoin responded with a 3-0 run to close out the match, getting a kill from Alison Smith and a game-clinching block from Haley Campau and Olivia Deane to seal the win, 15-13.

  • Olivia Deane led the way with 14 kills and three service aces in the win, while Alison Smith finished with 13 kills and three blocks.
  • Mina Mittler added tens kills, and Haley Campau posted nine kills, three aces, and five blocks.
  • Maya White had a team-high 23 digs while Skye LaMendola had 14 digs.
  • Cameron Shelly had 27 assist and Joy Liu added 17 to key the Bowdoin offense.
  • Bowdoin's previous highest-ever win over a ranked opponent was a victory over then fifth-ranked Johnson & Wales in September of 2019.
