Volleyball Blanks Southern Maine in Home Opener

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 win over the University of Southern Maine in its home opener on Wednesday evening in Morrell Gymnasium. The Polar Bears improve to 3-1 while the Huskies fall to 1-6.
 
Game Highlights
  • The Polar Bears won by set scores of 25-16, 25-11, 25-11 to claim their 15th straight win over the Huskies dating back to 2001.
  • The only set that proved to be tight was the opener, as a 4-0 USM run midway through the set closed the Bowdoin lead to 14-13. The Polar Bears recovered with a 3-0 surge to create some space and closed the set on a 6-0 run to take the overall 1-0 lead.
  • Bowdoin trailed only early in the second set and used a 10-1 run to take a 15-4 lead. In the third set, Bowdoin jumped to a 9-3 lead en route to the win.
By The Numbers
  • Skye LaMendola didn't commit an error, collecting ten kills and nine digs to lead the Polar Bears.
  • Bowdoin featured a balanced attack that saw six players notch three or more kills, led by six from Alison Smith and five from Mina Mittler.
  • Mary John had four kills and five blocks while Maya White had a team-best 15 digs.
  • Cameron Shelly had 18 assists and Joy Liu dished out 13.
  • Bowdoin had eight service aces as a team in the victory and committed just six attack errors in the contest.

  • Bowdoin will head to Brandeis for a busy weekend of action featuring matches on Friday and Saturday. The Polar Bears open against the host school at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
