Men's Soccer Falls on Second Half Goal to Williams

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Williams College men's soccer team scored with 18:35 remaining in the second half to pull out a 1-0 decision over Bowdoin on Saturday at Pickard Field. The Ephs move to 6-2-1 (4-2-0 NESCAC) while the Polar Bears fall to 4-2-2 (1-2-2 NESCAC).

Game Highlights
  • Williams controlled the pace in the early going, but it was Bowdoin who had the better scoring chances in the opening half of the contest.
  • The Polar Bears' best chance to score came in the closing minutes of the first period when a shot from Adam Prince looked destined for inside the right post, but was cleared off the line by Williams' Griffin Labonski.
  • In a physical second half, the teams traded good opportunities but neither could find the back of the net until the 73rd minute when a cross through traffic was deflected by the Bowdoin defense to the foot of Spencer Mix, who fired a low shot into the goal at 72:25.
  • Bowdoin upped the offensive pressure after that and had a pair of good chances, first off the boot of Felipe Rueda Duran that was stopped by Ben Diffley with 12 minutes to go.
  • Then, in the closing seconds, a free kick by Tyler Huck bounced around inside the Williams box, where Jack Banks unleashed a hard shot to the goal that was smothered by Diffley to preserve the tie with just 52 seconds to go.
By The Numbers
  • Williams had a slim 13-11 edge in shots overall, 5-4 in shots on goal.
  • Diffley made four stops, as did Bowdoin goaltender Alex Ainsworth
  • Bowdoin had three corner kick opportunities to none for Williams.
  • Bowdoin's last five contests (1-2-2) have been tied or decided by a single goal in either direction.
Up Next
  • The Polar Bears are off until next Saturday, October 5, when they host Middlebury at noon.
