Big Second Half Lifts Middlebury Past Bowdoin in Football Home Opener

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Middlebury football team scored the final 32 points of the game to rally for a 39-15 win over Bowdoin on Saturday afternoon at Whittier Field. The loss in their home opener drops to the Polar Bears to 0-2 while Middlebury moves to 1-1.

Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin's defense was the story in the early going, holding Middlebury to just 18 yards over their first seven drives with no first downs.
  • After a game-opening field goal from Caden Perry from 19 yards out midway through the first quarter, Angus Leary and Koy Price combined on a sack of Middlebury's Brian Moran in the end zone for a safety, giving the hosts a 5-0 edge.
  • Later in the first quarter, Price sacked Moran again, forcing a fumble, and Leary recovered putting Bowdoin in great field position at the Middlebury 31. Three players later, Michael Wolfendale covered the final four yards to paydirt to give the Polar Bears a 12-0 lead just moments into the second period.
  • It would stay that way until the final minute of the second quarter when a handful of Bowdoin penalties pinned Bowdoin deep in their own territory and forced a punt, which Middlebury took at their own 47. The Panthers covered 53 yards on six plays, scoring on a pass from Moran to Connor McClellan to cut the Polar Bear lead to 12-7 at the break.
  • After trading possessions to start the second half, Bowdoin recovered another Middlebury fumble deep in Panther territory but could only muster a 20-yard field goal to make it 15-7.
  • That proved costly as the Panthers took command from there, scoring the final 32 points of the game that included scoring drives of 75, 65, and 56 yards.
