Byrne and Goorno Lead Eight Polar Bears in USILA All-American Honors

BRUNSWICK, Maine – A school-record eight members of the Bowdoin College men's lacrosse team have been recognized in U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association All-American honors announced on Thursday.

Additionally, seniors Will Byrne (Darien, Conn.) and Zack Goorno (Concord, Mass.) have received two of the organization's most prestigious individual awards as Byrne was named Lt. Col. JI Turnbull Outstanding Attackman of the Year and Goorno was recognized as the Short Stick Defensive Midfielder of the Year.

Byrne, Goorno, and defenseman Jed Hoggard (Acton, Mass.) were all recognized as First Team All-Americans while faceoff specialist Ethan Barnard (Boxford, Mass.) was named Second Team and midfielder Oliver Bernstein (Brookline, Mass.) was tabbed as Third Team. Attackman Jason Lach (Washington, D.C.), Defenseman Nate Ryan (San Diego, Calif.), and goaltender Robert Hobbs (Wayne, Pa.) were all named Honorable Mention All-Americans.

Bowdoin's three First Team All-Americans are the most in program history in a single season and match the total number of all-time First Team All-Americans prior to this year (Connor Fitzgerald in 2006, Barnard in '22, Goorno in '23).

Byrne left an indelible mark on the Bowdoin record books in just three seasons as a Polar Bear. This season, he was named the NESCAC Player of the Year and NEILA (New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association) Player of the Year after scoring 52 goals with a school-record 63 assists and 115 points. He finishes his career second in assists (134), second in points (299), and third in goals (165).

Goorno repeats as the USILA's Defensive Midfielder of the Year after another fantastic campaign on both sides of the field for the Polar Bears. He was second on the team to Barnard in ground balls, with 60, while also causing 13 turnovers and adding seven goals with ten assists. His 208 career ground balls are the most by a non-faceoff specialist in school history, standing third all-time, and he added 26 goals and 35 assists in 60 career contests.

Hoggard earns his first All-American nod after a outstanding defensive campaign for Bowdoin, collecting 36 ground balls and causing 11 turnovers. He helped spearhead a Bowdoin defense that permitted just 10.85 goals/game this year. Barnard collects his third All-American honor after winning 60.6% of his faceoffs and leading the squad with 132 ground balls. His 61.9% career faceoff win percentage is second all-time at Bowdoin while his 920 career wins and 486 career ground balls are easily the most in program history. Bernstein nets his first All-American honor at the midfield for the Polar Bears, contributing 30 goals, 18 assists, and 15 ground balls. In 57 career games, Bernstein posted 69 goals, 37 assists, and 41 ground balls while scoring five man-up goals for Bowdoin.

Honorable Mention honors went to Jason Lach, whose 65 goals this year stand third in a single-season in Bowdoin history. In three years, Lach has posted 161 goals, just 16 off the school's career mark. Nate Ryan and Robert Hobbs backboned a staunch Bowdoin defense this year as Ryan collected a team-best 23 caused turnovers and 34 ground balls in front of Hobbs, who posted a career-best 10.63 GAA and .560 save percentage this spring. Hobbs' 43 career wins are tied for the most in Bowdoin history.

In All-New England honors also announced this week, Byrne was named NEILA Player of the Year along with First Team. Bernstein, Hoggard, Goorno, and Hobbs were also First Team All-NEILA. Lach collected Second Team All-NEILA recognition.

Bowdoin finished its season 14-6, reaching the NCAA Division III semifinals for the first time in program history.
