Men's Lacrosse Storms Christopher Newport, Returns to NCAA Semifinals

MEDFORD, Mass. – The Bowdoin College men's lacrosse team scored the first six goals of the game in a dominant 19-11 win over Christopher Newport in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday night at Tufts.

The win propels the Polar Bears (16-3) into the national semifinals for the second straight season, where they will play Tufts for a trip to the NCAA Championship game on Sunday evening at 7:30 p.m. The Captains end their year with a record of 18-4.

Game Highlights
  • The Polar Bears stormed out of the gate with a 6-0 run in the opening ten minutes, sparked by a goal from defenseman Jed Hoggard just 26 seconds into the game, followed by three straight from Sam Raye-Steiner.
  • Jason Lach took over offensively from there, scoring eight of Bowdoin's next 15 goals, tying the school's single-game goal scoring record in the process.
  • Lach had three goals in the first quarter as Bowdoin claimed a 7-2 lead and extended it to 10-4 at halftime.
  • CNU could get no closer than four goals after starting the second half with a pair of tallies that trimmed the lead to 10-6 as Lach and Patrick Fitzgerald scored three goals each in a 6-0 Bowdoin surge that pushed the lead to 16-6 early in the fourth quarter.
By The Numbers
  • Lach's eight goals were a career-high for the program's all-time leading goal scorer, and tied the single-game mark held by ten other players, most recently by Patrick Fitzgerald in 2023.
  • Sam Raye-Steiner had four goals while Patrick Fitzgerald added three. Casey Ryan had four assists.
  • Bowdoin controlled the face-off dot, as Beau Burns (9), Cam Wietfeldt (6) and Alex Choi (4) combined to go 19-31 for the Polar Bears.
  • Robert Hobbs made eight saves in goal for Bowdoin while Jack Pyne led a stellar defensive effort with two caused turnovers and six ground balls. Christopher Newport's 11 goals were their second-lowest total of the season.
  • Bowdoin owned a 59-33 advantage in shots (38-19 in shots on goal) and won 48 ground balls compared to 33 for the Captains.
  • The Polar Bears have outscored their opponents 63-19 through the first three games of the NCAA Tournament.
Up Next
  • Bowdoin will play NESCAC foe Tufts for the second time this season in the national semifinals Sunday at 7:30 p.m. Tufts (21-0) won the regular season meeting between the two, 15-14 (2OT), on April 23. Tufts are the defending NCAA Division III Champions while the Polar Bears, who lost in the NCAA semifinals to RIT last spring, are looking to make their first-ever national title game appearance.
