Men's Lacrosse Dominates Grove City in NCAA Tournament Opener

TROY, N.Y. – The Bowdoin College men's lacrosse team overwhelmed Grove City from the opening moments in a dominant 23-9 NCAA Tournament Second Round win on Saturday afternoon at RPI.
 
The Polar Bears (12-5) advance to the Third Round on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. where they will battle RPI for a spot in the national quarterfinals.
 
Game Highlights
  • The Polar Bears completely took the air out of the game in the opening ten minutes, scoring eight goals in the first 9:04 to put the Wolverines in an early hole.
  • Sam Raye-Steiner got Bowdoin going just 1:47 into the contest and ended the quarter with another goal at the 5:56 mark.
  • Bowdoin continued to the roll in the second quarter as Jason Lach and Liam Tasker found the back of the net to push the Polar Bears' lead to an insurmountable ten goals just three minutes into the second period.
  • After Grove City finally dented the scoreboard at the 12:12 mark, Will Byrne sparked a 5-0 run that gave the Polar Bears an astounding 15-1 lead.
  • The Polar Bears led 15-4 at the break, 18-7 after the third and scored five more times in the fourth quarter to cap the win.
By The Numbers
  • Will Byrne and Matt Ward had four goals and two assists apiece to lead the Bowdoin attack.
  • Jason Lach also notched four goals, while Huck Trafton added three as ten different players scored.
  • Ethan Barnard keyed the offensive explosion with 12 wins in 16 faceoff attempts. He also led the squad with nine ground balls.
  • Defensively, Robert Hobbs made 12 saves while Aidan Philie and Matthew Fierro had two caused turnovers each.
  • Bowdoin owned an incredible 63-36 advantage in shots in the win.
  • The 23 goals tied a Bowdoin NCAA Tournament single-game record, set in 2022 against Colorado College.

  • Bowdoin will face RPI at 3:00 p.m. Sunday in the third round. The teams have never faced each other in regular or postseason play.
