TROY, N.Y. – For the second time in program history, and the second time in the last three seasons, the Bowdoin College men's lacrosse team advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals following an impressive 12-5 win at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Sunday afternoon.
The Polar Bears (13-5) advance to play Middlebury at a site to-be-determined in the quarterfinal round next Saturday, May 18. Third-ranked RPI ends its season with a record of 17-3.
Game Highlights
- The teams traded goals in the early going before the Polar Bears too control of the contest.
- The defensive unit sparked the effort, holding RPI to one goal over a 38:27 span in the middle of the contest.
- Meanwhile, the Polar Bears found their footing offensively as Jason Lach keyed a 5-1 surge to end the opening half. Casey Ryan and Ethan Barnard scored five seconds apart in the run as well, as Bowdoin carried a 6-3 edge into the break.
- Bowdoin's defensive continued to suffocate the Engineers in the second half as they held the hosts scoreless for the entire third period.
- Sam Raye-Steiner scored twice in a 4-0 run that pushed Bowdoin's lead to 10-3 with under 13 minutes remaining in the contest.
- RPI was able to cut into the lead at the 12:43 mark, but goals by Will Byrne and Matt Ward with under seven minutes to go extended Bowdoin's lead to 12-4, putting the game on ice.
By The Numbers
- Goaltender Robert Hobbs and the Bowdoin defensive corps were outstanding, holding RPI to a season-low five goals. Hobbs finished with 21 saves in the victory.
- A balanced offensive attack saw Will Byrne score three goals with two assists while Casey Ryan added two goals and an assist.
- Sam Raye-Steiner, Jason Lach, and Matt Ward each scored a pair of goals for the Polar Bears.
- Ethan Barnard had won 12 of 21 faceoffs and had nine ground balls in the victory.
- Alex Byrne had one caused turnover and three ground balls to pace the Bowdoin defense.

- Bowdoin will battle Middlebury for a trip to the national semifinals at a site to be announced. RIT will be the other game in the regional bracket against the winner of Stevens and Christopher Newport. It will be the third meeting of the season between the teams. Bowdoin won the regular season meeting on March 9 (16-10) while the Panthers took the win in the NESCAC semifinals on May 4 (17-9).
