Softball Advances to NESCAC Semifinals After Shutout Upset of Middlebury

MEDFORD, Mass. – The Bowdoin softball team upset second-seeded Middlebury 4-0 to advance to the semifinals in the NESCAC Tournament.
 
The Polar Bears earned the seven seed for the conference tournament and advance with a 24-15 overall record. The Panthers' season comes to an end with a 23-12 record.
 
Game Highlights
  • Kyla Gary reached base to lead off the top of the third and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Elise Siciliano to make it 1-0.
  • Chloe Garcia added an insurance RBI in the fifth, plating Gary once again, with a single up the middle.
  • Kathleen Hester pitched 4.2 shutout innings before Maddie Current came in to escape the bottom of the fifth without allowing Middlebury to score. The Panthers stranded three runners.
  • Middlebury stranded two more runners in the sixth as Current kept the shutout alive.
  • JK Bradley doubled Bowdoin's lead with one swing as she dropped a two-run single to left.
 
By the Numbers
  • Hester allowed four hits with five strikeouts to earn the win. Current recorded a save with a pair of strikeouts and three hits allowed.
  • Bowdoin combined for 10 hits against the Panthers, paced by Garcia, Bradley, and Penelope Fong-Picariello who all had two.
  • Anika Ewert added two more stolen bases to her season tally of 50 and was stranded four times after two walks.
  • Bowdoin advanced out of the quarterfinals for the first time since 2018.
