BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College athletic department has announced that head coach of men's and women's squash
Theo Woodward has decided to leave Bowdoin at the end of the academic year to pursue passions outside of collegiate squash.
Woodward was named head coach of men's and women's squash at Bowdoin in May of 2019 and successfully guided the programs to new heights on and off the court during his five years at the College. In both 2020 and '22 Woodward was named NESCAC Men's Squash Coach of the Year and in 2023 he led Bowdoin to the Conroy Cup title for the first time since 2018.
The women's squash team consistently ranked among the top-20 teams in the nation during his tenure and Woodward departs Bowdoin with the fourth-most coaching victories in the history of the men's and women's squash programs (77 total wins).
"Theo has been an incredibly well respected and engaged member of our athletic department and campus community, and I will miss his consistent positivity and good humor," said Ashmead White Executive Director of Athletics Tim Ryan '98. "His lasting impact on our squash programs will carry on for years to come, and I look forward to following his success in the future."
"I am very thankful to Bowdoin and in particular Tim Ryan for giving me the opportunity to lead the Bowdoin Squash programs over the past five years," said Woodward. "I also want to thank
Brendan McClintick, Rhonda Lake, Ian Squiers, John Moncure, the Bowdoin Squash teams, Bowdoin support staff, their families and alumni for their support. This special opportunity has given me the privilege to contribute to and inspire the lives of young high performing adults via the beautiful game of squash. I have enjoyed our exciting matches and of course the wins, but the highlight has and continues to be the relationships that have been developed through the exceptional community that is Bowdoin Squash. I am excited for the future of the program and to continue to cheer the Polar Bears on."
Bowdoin will begin an immediate national search for Woodward's replacement.
