Women's Lacrosse Uses Big Second Quarter to Sprint Past Bates

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College women's lacrosse team used a dominant second quarter to propel themselves to a 24-11 win over Bates on Tuesday evening at Ryan Field. The Polar Bears, who cracked the IWLCA Division III rankings last week at number 25 this week, improve to 7-3 (3-3 NESCAC) with their fifth straight win while the Bobcats (4-6, 0-5 NESCAC) remain winless in conference play.

Game Highlights
  • Bates owned a 5-3 lead after the opening quarter, and after Bowdoin opened the second quarter on a 3-0 run, tied the game at 6-6 with 12:13 left in the opening half.
  • It was all Bowdoin after that, as the hosts closed the first half on a 9-0 surge, sparked by four goals from Ellie Schofield, and outscored Bates 12-1 overall in the period.
  • Bates closed to within six goals, at 15-9, early in the second half, but the Polar Bears doused all thoughts of a comeback with an eight-goal run, highlighted by four goals from Lauren Burke to run away with the win.
By The Numbers
  • Ellie Schofield finished with six goals and four draw controls for Bowdoin while Lauren Burke added five goals and two ground balls.
  • Emelia Krakora totaled three goals and two assists while Grace Harvey and Maddie Mrva both also had hat tricks.
  • Izzy Cisneros made two saves in net for Bowdoin while Auggie Burke had five caused turnovers. Molly Reed led the Polar Bears with six draw controls.
  • Bowdoin went 5-5 in free position attempts in the contest.
  • The Polar Bears have won 13 of their last 14 meetings with Bates dating back to 2009. The 24 goals scored were the most ever by a team in the series, dating back to 1975, and the 13-goal margin of victory matches Bowdoin's largest win over the Bobcats (21-8) in 2000.
