Softball Sweeps Amherst in Home Opener on Brand New Pickard Field

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin softball team picked up its first conference wins with a series sweep over Amherst to open play on the brand new Pickard Field.
 
The Polar Bears climb to 15-7 (2-4 NESCAC), while dropping the Mammoths to 5-16 (2-6 NESCAC).
 
Game One Highlights
  • Bowdoin took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Anika Ewert hit a leadoff triple down the left field line and came home to score on a long Penelope Fong-Picariello foul out deep down the right field line.
  • Amherst took the lead in the top of the fourth with a two-run double to left field.
  • Sydney Lang hit the first homerun on the new field with a blast over the scoreboard in left field to tie the game in the fourth.
  • Bowdoin's game-winning runs came in the sixth inning. With a pair of runners on base, an error on the play to first allowed both runners to come home.
  • Kathleen Hester went the distance with three hits allowed and five strikeouts.
  • Ewert and Kyla Gary each recorded two hits in the win.
 
Game Two Highlights
  • With runners on second and third in the bottom of the opening inning, both Chloe Garcia and Elise Siciliano recorded RBI groundouts to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Amherst cut the lead in half during the next inning with a sacrifice fly to left that allowed the runner on third to score.
  • Lang added an RBI single up the middle in the third to create a little breathing room for the Polar Bears and Liv Barrett added a two-run single.
  • With a runner on third in the sixth inning, Shea Sullivan singled through the left side to make it 6-1.
  • Anna Halliday pitched four innings and allowed four hits with one strikeout. Maddie Current pitched the final three innings, allowing no runs or hits.
  • Barrett went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.
