Baseball Picks Up Friday Night NESCAC Victory Bates

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin baseball team earned its first conference win in a grueling 13-8 victory over visiting Bates on Friday night.
 
The Polar Bears improved to 12-10 on the season and 1-2 in NESCAC play. The Bobcats are 11-10 (2-5 NESCAC).
 
Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin carried a 3-0 lead after the third inning, helped along by an RBI single off the bat of Reuban Siegel and a two-run double by Luke Chessie.
  • Bates tied the game in the fourth with a two-run homer and an RBI double.
  • The Polar Bears went up 10-3 in the fifth with timely hitting and capitalizing on several walks.
  • The Bobcats chipped away with a combined four runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but Bowdoin found three more runs in the eighth.
  • Bates recorded one final run in the ninth inning but could not rally to catch the Polar Bears.
 
By the Numbers
  • Kevin Murray, Siegel, and Cal Thompson all had multiple hits.
  • Siegel had three stolen bases against the Bobcats.
  • Bowdoin's infield turned two double plays.
  • Rudy Gately pitched 3.1 innings and allowed three earned runs off five hits, with five strikeouts.
  • Alex Saavedra pitched 2.2 innings and allowed one run with three hits allowed.
  • Connor Cassady got the Polar Bears out of a jam, coming in with the bases loaded and limiting the damage late in play. Cassady struck out three batters in two innings of work.

  • The Polar Bears only got through three innings of their doubleheader Saturday against Bates before the game was suspended due to rain. The remainder of the series will be made up at a to-be-determined date.
