Baseball Suffers Saturday Sweep at Home Against Tufts

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin baseball team suffered a doubleheader sweep at home to Tufts to begin NESCAC play on Saturday afternoon. Bowdoin dropped the first game by a 7-2 margin and the second by a score of 9-1.

The Polar Bears are 10-6 with a 0-2 NESCAC record. The Jumbos climb above .500 to 9-7 with a 2-0 start to conference play.

Game One Highlights
  • The teams battled through three scoreless innings, with the Polar Bears stranding five base runners.
  • Tufts broke through in the fourth with a bases-loaded groundout. Bowdoin stranded another runner in the bottom half of the inning but trailed 1-0.
  • The Jumbos added another run in the fifth as Malachi Pena doubled to left and plated a run.
  • Ben McKenzie led off the bottom half of the inning with a single to left and Chris Dirks followed up with a single down the rightfield line. Kevin Murray recorded Bowdoin's first RBI, grounding out to third, and plating McKenzie.
  • Bowdoin's equalizer came on a heads-up play by CJ Brito-Trinidad who stood on first following a walk. With Reuben Siegel at the plate, Brito-Trinidad took off for second and drew the throw from the catcher. The play allowed Chris Dirks to steal home as the Jumbos realized Brito-Trinidad's "steal" was a forced advancement as Siegel drew a walk with the previous pitch.
  • Tufts broke the game open in the top of the sixth as Malcolm Whitfield hit a three-run blast to left and a later run scored on a sacrifice fly. The Jumbos put up four runs off five hits.
  • Ozzie Fleischer laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt in the seventh to make it 7-2.
  • Luca McKerley Coronado started and pitched five innings with four hits, one earned run, and five strikeouts.
  • Franco Ruocco suffered the loss with .1 inning of work and four hits and runs surrendered.

Game Two Highlights
  • Both pitchers opened the game with two shutout innings, but the Jumbos jumped on Jason Bogdanos for four runs in the third and two more in the fourth.
  • Bowdoin scored two runs in the fifth off a chop to first.
  • Tufts scored three more unanswered runs in the seventh and eighth.
  • McKenzie went 3-for-5 at the plate, while Kevin Murray and Lukas Tsai were 2-for-4.
