BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College women's basketball team held off UMass Dartmouth in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday evening, 67-59, advancing to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 2020.
The Sweet Sixteen appearance will be the 16
th in program history for the Polar Bears overall as they improve to 27-2 on the year. Bowdoin will face Baldwin Wallace (Ohio) in the third round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, March 8. Sectional sites and game times will be announced on Sunday. The Corsairs finish their season with a record of 24-5.
Game Highlights
- With Bowdoin leading 13-9 late in the opening quarter, thanks to five early points from Carly Davey, the Corsairs went on a quick 5-0 run to close the period and take a 14-13 edge after one period.
- Seven points from Megan Tan sparked an 18-point second quarter for Bowdoin as a seemingly benign layup at the 1:56 mark by Callie Godfrey gave the Polar Bears a 29-28 advantage and a lead they would never relinquish for the remainder of the game.
- Bowdoin led 31-30 at the break and made several attempts to deliver a knockout blow in the third frame, including an 8-0 run sparked by a highlight reel 50-foot pass from Sydney Jones to Maria Belardi for a lay-in that saw the Polar Bears extend their advantage to 44-35 midway through the quarter.
- UMass Dartmouth refused to go away, however, and replied with a late surge that closed the gap to just two points, 50-48, entering the fourth quarter.
- A Belardi three-pointer quickly pushed Bowdoin's lead back to five points in the opening minute of the fourth, and after a pair of UMD free throws made it a three-point game, Abbie Quinn buried a jumper to key a 6-0 run that again pushed Bowdoin's lead to nine, 59-50, with 5:51 to go.
- The Corsairs kept within striking distance, but could never close it back to a one possession game for the remainder of the contest as Bowdoin went 6-6 in the closing minutes from the free throw line to seal the win.

- Sydney Jones recorded the first triple-double in NCAA play by a Bowdoin women's basketball player, posting 12 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists while Megan Tan netted 14 points, including a trio of three-pointers.
- Callie Godfrey was outstanding with 12 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks for Bowdoin while Maria Belardi contributed nine key points off the bench.
- UMD was led by 18 points from Teha Andrews as the Corsairs shot 31% but were able to stay close thanks to a 16-18 effort from the free throw line and 22 points off 23 Bowdoin turnovers.
- Bowdoin finished at 46% shooting for the game and owned a 40-32 edge on the glass in the game.

- Bowdoin will face Baldwin Wallace for the first time in school history next Friday evening in the third round. The Sectional site and game times will be announced on Sunday.
- The Yellow Jackets (22-6) will be playing in their seventh Sweet Sixteen all-time, with their last coming in 2022 with wins over Trinity (59-54) and New Paltz (65-42).
